Barcelona is taking big steps to make your visit even more memorable! With millions of visitors arriving each year, the city has announced the creation of a beautiful new plaza in front of the Sagrada Família—one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.
Each day, up to 16,000 people come to see the awe-inspiring basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí. While only about 20% go inside, most visitors stop to admire and photograph the façade. This has made the area outside quite busy—until now!

To make the experience smoother and more enjoyable for everyone, Barcelona’s City Council is creating a dedicated photo and gathering space right at Plaça Gaudí—a 66,740 square-foot open plaza designed to reduce sidewalk congestion and give both locals and tourists more breathing room.
Construction is set to begin after summer 2025 and finish by April 2026—a symbolic date marking the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s passing. The project is expected to cost around €2.7 million, showing the city’s strong commitment to a welcoming, world-class tourism experience.
A Smart Space for Photos, Relaxation, and Culture
This isn’t just about one site—Barcelona is rolling out smart improvements across 15 high-traffic areas, including Park Güell, La Rambla, and Barceloneta, as part of its broader plan for sustainable, balanced tourism.
These changes reflect a city that’s not just beautiful but also forward-thinking and traveler-friendly—an ideal time to plan your visit!
