Sónar Festival 2025 Changes Ownership | New Era for Barcelona’s Iconic Event

Barcelona’s world-famous Sónar Festival — a global symbol of music, creativity, and digital culture — is entering a new era. After 32 years of leadership, its original founders have officially stepped away, marking one of the biggest transitions in the festival’s history.

A New Chapter for Sónar

Founded in 1994 by Enric Palau, Ricard Robles, and Sergio Caballero, Sónar became one of Europe’s most important festivals for electronic music and technology. Now, the festival’s management passes to Superstruct Entertainment, an international event group backed by the U.S. investment firm KKR, led by Belgian entrepreneur François Jozic.

This change was announced shortly after the conclusion of the 2025 edition, sparking both excitement and debate among the creative community.

“We are proud of what we’ve built, and we trust that the new leadership will continue to innovate,” said the founders in a joint statement.

The End of an Era — and a New Vision Ahead

The departure of the original team closes a chapter that defined Sónar as more than a festival. It was a laboratory for sound, visuals, and digital art — one that shaped Barcelona’s modern cultural identity.

Under the new ownership, Sónar promises to maintain its innovative DNA while expanding its global reach and digital presence. According to early statements, the 2026 edition will further integrate AI-driven creativity, immersive experiences, and a larger focus on sustainable event design.

The 2025 Controversy

However, the transition did not come without turbulence. Earlier this year, several artists — including some headliners — withdrew from Sónar 2025, citing alleged financial links between KKR and controversial projects in occupied territories.

In response, Sónar’s organizers issued a public statement reaffirming the festival’s independence and commitment to ethical transparency. Despite the boycott, the event attracted thousands of visitors, and its program remained largely intact.

Looking Toward Sónar 2026

The next edition, Sónar 2026, is set for June 18–20, 2026, and will take place entirely at Fira Gran Via in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. The consolidation of Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night into a single location aims to create a smoother and more connected festival experience.

Fans can expect:

  • Global and local electronic acts across multiple genres
  • Art installations and interactive digital labs
  • Professional meet-ups under Sónar+D (the creativity and technology summit)
  • A renewed focus on inclusivity and sustainability
